Food and Travel – Special Blog Post
The Creative Eats Team has made another visit to the beautiful rolling hills of Litchfield, CT. This time around we chose to explore picturesque Woodbury; a small town filled with antique shops, a general store, hiking trails, farms, and barns. Of course, the best place to start your day off is a delicious breakfast at Dottie’s Diner. Dottie’s has been the recipient of many different awards including being featured in Connecticut Magazine and the book “500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late” by Jane and Michael Stern. Located just south of the center of Woodbury, Dottie’s is a 1950s retro style diner complete with barstools, comfortable turquoise booths, and a black and white checkered floor. Adjacent to the main dining area, they have a special take out and coffee bar section featuring their famous sugar dusted doughnuts. If you’re looking to dine in, grab a seat at the U-shaped bar or make yourself comfortable in one of the large booths.
There are so many delicious choices on their extensive menu but we were intrigued to order the steak and eggs, Eggs Benedict, buttermilk pancakes, coffee cake French toast, and the 3 egg omelet. Both the Eggs Benedict and the steak and eggs dishes came with red bliss home fries prepared with fresh red and green peppers and onions. The poached eggs were beautifully done and they were served atop fresh spinach and tomatoes. The 3 egg omelet came stuffed with American cheese, bacon, mushrooms, and onions with buttered toast on the side. They source their bacon locally from Nodine’s Smokehouse. It was incredibly flavorful and delicious. The short stack blueberry coffee cake French toast came with pure maple syrup from a local farm. The slices were thick cut, super moist and so sweet that we didn’t even need any maple syrup! Next time, we’re looking forward to trying some of their specials off the chalkboard menu; in particular the Lemon Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes and the Apple Cinnamon Waffle.
